In August 2021, David and Rheanne visited Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore located in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula along the north-east side of Lake Michigan. This area contains the world’s largest collection of freshwater sand dunes, with heights up to 400 feet above lake level. While the 400-site main campground was full, the first-come, first-serve 6-site walk-in campground still had an opening for them. They only had to carry their gear 1.2 miles into the woods, and bring along all the water they needed. I asked Rheanne if the sites had pit toilets, to which she replied, “Yes, but they had doors, walls and toilet paper, so they were pretty good.” I learned later that in the Boundary Waters where they had camped a number of times, the pit toilets had none of those amenities, just the toilet. I’m just fine with flush toilets and running water, thank you!
