Vaughnde
Cool Beans! After our chat today, I went ahead and played. I'm gonna post my layout which I did for the High Noon crop also in the PSP Gallery. First Boyfriend Details are in the gallery on how I made it too.
TrixyA
Cool! I have been playing with masks for a couple of months, but don't really understand what they do. I just keeping pushing buttons and undoing and redoing things until something cool happens. By that point, I'm usually so confused that I have no idea what I did to get the result that I like. Once my allergy meds kick in, I ought to have bunches of questions.
DDecker
Hope it kicks in soon Trixy! We missed you yesterday. Here is a quick little explanation of masks. You will need a photo and a piece of white printer paper. Fold the paper in half and then half again so you have a basic square. Tear off the FOLDED corner so when you unfold you have a hole in the middle. Reserve the torn corner Unfold the paper and place over the photo so you can see the photo thru the hole. You have made a "Hide all" mask, the paper hides all but the where the "transparent" hole is Take the paper off and place the torn corner, unfolded on the photo so just a portion is covered. This is a "show all" mask, hiding only the portion of the photo where the paper is. Black in a template is "hide all" White in a template is "show all" Shades of grey show or hide depending on the dark or lightness Example has a white background so you can see the difference. HTH! TrixyA
One of the concepts that I'm having trouble getting a handle on is "when is it better to use a mask, rather than using layer styles?"
DDecker
What layer style are you thinking of Trixy? I have not played with layer styles in X2 yet.
TrixyA
Oh! I meant Blend Modes-- I've peeked at layer styles, but haven't messed around with them. The little bit I did just freaked out my computer and crashed it-- seems to be a very memory intensive feature. Anyway, I meant to compare masks with layer blend modes. I always end up trying all of them five or six times before deciding on which one I like.
Vaughnde
I do that too...texturizing and playing around with texture, masking, and different levels of opacity in blend modes and I'm sure its better in x, xi and xii than my version 9 but its still so much fun. Sometimes I just simply open it up and play and save and play some more without even creating any layouts. Then I got tons of papers and suchlike to choose from. Only problem is my HD is filling up hehe...

TrixyA
I'm stuck at home, waiting for a phone call today. Alas, I must sit and play at my computer.... it's a tough way to spend a quiet Sunday. Here's my shot at playing with a mask. I actually understood which settings would work when I went to the "New Mask Layer from Image" command. DianeB
Hi All- I love to use masks as a selection tool. I like it because if you make a mistake you just paint in with the opposit color (black/white) and the original part reappears. Also I find that the edges are often crisper. It works really, really well for doing "out of bounds" photos.

Vaughnde
I used the masking technique to do this layout. WOW I think you better set up some step by steps for those of us who haven't done it yet. This is what I want to learn and now that I have pspxi I can
angelaNussbaum
That is awesome isnt it! I just played with the same method, but just to pull a picture out of the back ground. It was pretty neat.
SydneyScrapper
I just did the paper thing that Dee suggested, and had a look at masks in PSP but I really don't understand what it does. I've tried looking at the layouts that you've all posted, but I'm not exactly sure what effect the masking had on them. When I tried to create a new mask layer out of a picture (just to try it), I had a few option to choose from. I chose the opacity option for want of knowing any better, and it just showed the negative image in the layers palette and then I wasn't sure what to do with it! Can anyone tell me in a few steps what it does and how to create a mask?

I'm going to echo the request for some detailed instructions on using masks as a selection tool. Thanks for posting the chat, Dee. I think I can make that one! That's next Monday morning, right? Vaughnde
Yes I did upgrade and Yes I got more memory! both installed last saturday so now I can zip along at 2.4 gig of memory! Thats how I was able to do the text on a path circle on my brother's layout for the saturday color challenge. It refused to work in PSP 9 kept freezing up to my frustration so I was super happy with PSP xi to use text on a path But I have noticed that it seems to take me almost twice as long to do a layout right now. Guess I'm still getting a feel for xi. I still have 9 on the computer and wonder if I should take it off?
TrixyA
Vaughnde-- when I switched up from 9 to X2, I had a lot of trouble with crashing until I unloaded 9.

PurpleJAF
Looks like I'm the only one still using 9? I might have to make a few altered clocks to sell on ebay so I can upgrade, too. That way I'll be able to keep up with y'all. Congrats, Vaughnde! That's wonderful that you were able to upgrade and got more memory, too. Whoo hoo! I'll be able to do more with you all in chats and stuff come July. My class finishes up and I don't think I'm going to be going on in any more classes. I'm just not enjoying life with all the pressure. I hope I can make this next chat. I'm going to try to be there.
