Elm Creek Quilts Novels

I have found a true treasure here, ladies! I've been reading this series of books by Jennifer Chiaverini - the book I'm holding in my hands is called "An Elm Creek Sampler" - it's a collection of Jennifer's 1st three novels -- titled "The Quilters Apprentice", "Round Robin" and "The Cross-Country Quilters" -- and she has 4 or so more books, in addition to this one. Anyway, the reason I'm highly recommending it is because it TOTALLY REMINDS ME of Scrapgirls! The meat and backbone behind these books is a Quilters Retreat -- where ladies can get together and learn how to quilt, form friendships and connections, and bond because of the art of quilting. I've been reading the third book these past few days, and if this isn't my vision of a Scrapgirls Convention, I don't know what is! It's truly, truly heartwarming, and an absolutely fabulous series. Read it!! If you don't quilt, you may get a bug to do it. :) If you do, you will simply love this book.

Read it! Read it!! :)

Oh, yeah - they're great!

I just re-read one.

I wanted to go to a "camp" like that as soon as I read the first one.

Your library may have them classified all over the map - fiction, mystery, who knows.

The author has a cool website too.

The books certainly encouraged me in my quilting efforts.

I think you're right - the Oct event should be the closest we could come to their Quilt Camp.

:)

Thanks for the recommendation. Sounds like my speed of book. And it also sounds like a GREAT Christmas gift for my Mom (along with some sort of scrapping gift -- calendar, word album, more pages....something!). Both of us love sewing and dabble in quilting. We just finished laying out 8 simple quilts that she's making out of "scrap fabric" and will give to a relief organization that works here in the US. Her "scrap fabric" is gorgeous! She pulled out yards of amazing fabric, many of which coordinated beautifully, and cut them into the requisite size blocks. Then the two of us "played" with the various sets to come up with some really stunning "scrap quilts". At least one of them I'd love to have on my bed!!!

I've put this series on my wish list at Amazon so I don't forget! LOL!

She also incorporates a Quilt pattern with each book she writes. Now, it may have changed, but I think you can ask for the pattern and its free! That is as long as it hasn't changed since last year.

Oh, how fun. I didn't know she incorporates a quilt pattern in her books -- I'm definitely going to have to look into that. I finished one of the books on our vacation, and I'm itching to start a project. I really enjoy quilting, but digi scrapbooking has kind of taken over the last few months. :)

I love these books as well. I've only done a little quilting and its the same problem as paper scrapping... not enough room and too much mess and you need pretty big chunks of time to get much done. I used to watch all the Saturday morning public television quilting shows and just love art quilts. Maybe someday..... sigh...

I agree that the convention is probably going to be a lot like what is in the books. In a couple of weeks some of us midwest ladies will be getting together as well. I think that anything that draws people together and creates something beautiful is a marvelous bonding experience that elevates the human spirit. And we have fun too.
