Cloud Service Hacked

Recommended Posts

Some of you might know that I started using Western Digital's My Cloud Home Duo as my primary storage and backup. It was super convenient, did a double backup of everything I saved, and allowed me to access ALL my photos and scrapbooking stash from anywhere through either my laptop or an app. This morning the little unit that serves as my personal cloud was blinking at me. Uh oh. Three hours later and three different conversations with my internet service provider, Geek Squad AND Western Digital finally landed me on blog posts from entities like Hacker News and Bleeping Computer that Western Digital had had a major breach and shut down all of their web-based cloud services. It totally impacted my access to everything I've saved (even though I had a desktop link to my storage). Of course, I was on the phone with  WD support for 30 minutes, plugging and unplugging my stuff from my ethernet switch and router (after HOURS of troubleshooting online), before the tech guy made an offhand comment that I might get a response in 5-6 hours because "others were having similar problems." That comment prompted me to do a search on "Western Digital Problems April 3." I hit the payload on that search. Holy cow. Apparently WD issued a news release earlier today about an internet security breach, which resulted in a major hack, multiple systems internal and external shut down, and they have cyber security and law enforcement on it. Scary words like "ransomware" are used.

Just venting, but I have discovered a very major drawback to this personal cloud storage system after being pretty pleased with it. I am supposing my scrapbook stash and photos will be of little interest to the hackers, but this is terrible, terrible news for those numerous small businesses that use this system as their data storage solution and operation. I hope I get access to all of my stuff soon. 😬

Oh my goodness, this is awful and I'm so sorry to hear about it.    What a headache and it sounded like a wonderful service.   I hope it gets resolved for you soon, I'm sure you've already spent too much time on it but gosh....    What a pain.

Not even an email sent to customers about any of it so far. Is the breach so deep and compromised they don't even want to contact customers? That is what scares me.

Oh, my.   Not only irresponsible but even more worrisome.   Disappointing to hear this and you must be too.   Gosh, I'm sorry and hope there is some sort of resolution and sharing of info.
