Oh Happy Day!
I've had a lot of happy days lately, or at least funny ones that make me laugh. I'll tell you about one of them but first I'll explain how my puppy pen is built.
The pen is made from the three walls of my dining room and a home made barrier. A tarp was laid on the floor and taped to the three joining walls and hooked up into the door of my china cabinet, so the cabinet wouldn't get damaged. A home made barrier rests on the fourth edge of the tarp. Because there was no other place to put the dining table, it was left in the area and pushed against the wall. Plastic bags were taped to the legs to protect them.
Having the table in the area turned out to be a bonus because the pups prefer to sleep under it. I think it's the because of the cave dwelling instinct and the only problem with it is when I change the bedding or have to go under it for some reason. The puppies seem to think that I'm playing and they jump on the new bedding before I can get it spread, then they're all over me with kisses and nips while I try to straighten it.
They started to pull at the bags, on the legs of the table, so I coated the plastic with tape which seems to be more difficult for them to tear off. Of course they found something else to pull at and it was the tarp that was taped to the wall, beside the china cabinet. After re-taping it many times, I decided to nail it to the wall. The holes will repair and now the puppies can't get at the plastic underlay. This didn't deter my little angels from finding more tape to pull up. I had repeatedly tried to re-tape the tarp to the wall behind the table but was unsuccessful.
Needless to say, I knew I would have my hands full when I had to do a better fix. I had decided to nail a 2x4 to the floor, pinning the tarp down and there would be no more need for tape. I have to move slowly when I enter the pen and have learned to drag my feet so I won't hurt that pups as they chew at my shoes and pulling at my pant legs. I grabbed my hammer and slowly crawled, on all fours, under the table with the puppies clammering around me.
"No! No! No!, I'm not your mommy! Get out of my shirt you little rascals!" I would no sooner get one squirmy little bundle pulled out of my loose fitting T when another would crawl in. I had puppies chewing at my hair and oops! "Don't crawl under me from back there! Not my earrings - they're not safe for you! My glasses! Don't lick my glasses! Honest, my hair isn't food! Besides that, I just fed you guys!"
I slowly forged forward and hammered the nails through the board, into the floor, as the puppies overwhelmed me with kisses and nips while wiggling around me and under me. It was a slow process to get back out again, partially because the puppies were all over me and partially because I was laughing so hard by now, it was difficult to stand. The project was successful - the pups had some excercise and I had a laugh! Okay, so I got some excercise too but it was a hoot!
I love my daily times that I spend with the pups and getting puppy kisses!
